Sample Sort:
Develop your understanding of the math task framework by completing this sample sort activity. The activity has been developed with a general theme of subtraction as to have consistency between tasks.
Steps:
-Locate the "Documents" box on the right side of this page. This is where you'll download all of the documents mentioned in this activity.
-Download the "Subtraction Task Sort" and "Task Sort Recording Sheet" documents.
-Open up the "Subtraction Task Sort" and begin with task A.
-Read the task A and determine whether it is high or low cognitive demand using the chart provided below or by downloading the "Task Sort Chart."
-Next, determine if task A is memorization, procedure without connection, procedure with connection, or doing mathematics based on the criteria listed in each quadrant of the "Task Sort Chart."
-Open the "Task Sort Recording Sheet" and use the chart to record the label you assigned task A.
-Repeat for task B - task L.
-Upon finishing the task sort, download the answer key to see the correct categorizations and read explanations of each placement.
-Upon this activity, you should have gained familiarity with the types of tasks included in both high and cognitive demand as well as an understanding of the specific criterion used to classify tasks.
